The best thing about tile is it creates a hard surface that is easy to clean. Some tile lines are green, although most are not. Many tiles have a very high embodied energy, and some color glazes have harmful chemical compounds. Tile with a high recycled content is best, as long as there are no traces of asbestos. Handmade clay tiles with natural glazes are good, too. My favorite is recycled glass tile in the cobalt and aqua blues.
